About Me

I am an American (native American English-speaker) from Atlanta, Georgia, currently living in Lisbon, Portugal. I attended Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge where I studied Petroleum Engineering.

As a recent university student who was often disappointed with the mathematics instruction I received, I endeavored to establish a tutoring practice to provide what I often felt was missing in modern education. Specifically, I try to determine why my students might be struggling to understand a particular concept. Is it the required method of solving the problem, when a different approach might work equally well? Is it a foundational concept that was not mastered two or three years previously, and which can be resolved with a quick review of older material? Does my student suffer from a self-defeating "maths phobia"?

In addition to being a tutor, I am also a musician. I play a variety of percussion band instruments, traditional Irish fiddle, tin and low-D whistle, and I compose electronic and hip-hop music. I mention this to illustrate that I am personable, can identify with many students as a peer, and I understand there is more to life than studying mathematics. I realize that for many students it is a painful subject, but my objective is to help reduce the discomfort.

I tutor online exclusively, having transitioned to online instruction about two years ago.

Using an interactive online whiteboard with an embedded web cam display, we can work together no matter where you live. All you need is a computer (Mac or PC) and a decent internet connection. The technology is simple and dependable, which allows good student/teacher interaction without getting in the way of the learning and instruction process.

It’s easy for you to instantly upload homework problems, sample tests, review sheets or any other documents for us to work on together. As an added bonus, at the end of each session you will receive a PDF containing all of the notes and examples we used during your lesson.

My current favorite online whiteboard is BitPaper. If you don’t already have a BitPaper account, we’ll get you signed up at the start of your first session. It’s free, takes just a moment, and requires only an email address and no special hardware or software downloads.
